Subject

A heavy sky over a low skyline of palms and rooftops, with a sliver of sea visible between them.

Composition

Nine tenths sky. The skyline runs along the bottom eighth of the sheet and the palms break it at intervals; the cloud above is massed in ranks that darken toward the top edge.

Palette

Violet, periwinkle and lilac through the cloud, with white where the light breaks and a band of cerulean low down. The palms are green-black; the buildings mauve and cream.

Handling

Flat dabs laid in horizontal ranks with their edges showing, the darker violets scrubbed over the paler ground. The palms and buildings are quick single marks along the base.

Medium and support

Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque. Unpainted margins all round.

Signature

Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in orange over the rooftops, letters widely spaced.
