Hi, I’m Ray.

I make three kinds of things. Paintings — coastline and high desert, mostly, in watercolor and oil. A sketchbook page most days, ink and a wash, usually of whatever my corner of the internet is arguing about. And Kitty City, the comic I’ve been building toward for a couple of years.

The paintings are the slow ones. There are four hundred-odd of them in the archive here, going back to 2015 — the ocean, the Mojave, and the light at the end of the day, over and over until I get it. 2018 was the year of oils. 2019 everything turned to watercolor and it never turned back. Some are small enough to lose in a drawer, some need their own wall. I build the frames by hand in the shop out back, which nobody asks for and everybody notices.

The sketchbook is the fast one. Ink, a wash of color, done before the coffee is finished and posted the same morning. A good half of those are people — somebody from a stream I watch, somebody who got themselves in trouble that week — and plenty of them exist because a stranger said draw this and I did. Which is most of what a commission is, minus the part where I get paid.

Kitty City is the one I’m building now: three stray cats with a civilization of their own, concept work since 2023 and the first book in layout. The others are all the same man in different costumes — somebody knocked down further than he’d admit, carrying more than he should, who finds something small and ridiculous worth defending. He turns up in the seascapes as well, and in whatever the internet handed me before breakfast; I’ve stopped pretending that’s a coincidence. Same man, different costume, depending on the day.
