A head-and-shoulders portrait of a man in a cap and sunglasses, mouth wide open mid-shout, with long locks falling either side of his face.
Square and filled to every edge — the head is cropped at the top by the cap and at the bottom by the shoulders. The open mouth sits almost exactly at the centre, and the two lenses above it hold the only straight lines in the picture.
The face is built in acid green and yellow against a blue-black beard and locks, with the cap and glasses in cobalt and the mouth in coral and crimson. The ground behind is a pale sage and cream, the only quiet passage.
Modelled rather than flat — the face is built from planes of unmixed colour laid side by side and allowed to meet, with the drawing carried entirely by where one colour stops. The locks are stroked in short directional marks following their fall.
Oil. Moderately loaded, the brushwork legible throughout, with no impasto.
Lower right, patrick, in cobalt against the dark ground.
