A hotel pool from the deck, with swimmers in the water, loungers ranked along the far side, palms behind, and a tiled terrace running out toward the viewer.
The pool sits as a bright trapezoid in the middle distance and the purple terrace opens toward the bottom corners, so the eye enters across the tiles. Loungers at the left and right edges frame it, both cropped.
Turquoise and jade in the water against a terrace of plum and aubergine — the boldest colour decision on the wall, and unusual for being the ground rather than the sky. Above, a pale green-blue sky with white umbrellas.
The terrace is laid as a grid of flat squares, each one a single stroke of a slightly different violet, so the floor shimmers without being drawn. The swimmers are three or four dark marks apiece.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque, the pale umbrellas sitting solid over the sky. Unpainted margins, with the title pencilled below.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in cobalt over the terrace, letters widely spaced. Below it, in pencil: London West Hollywood Hotel.
I used to get my hair cut in the salon in the London Hotel. Nikki told me about the great pool on the roof. I came back on the weekend to paint it. The burgers and bikinis were great.
