A large wave standing up and beginning to throw, seen from the shoulder, with the open face turned toward the viewer and backlit spray blowing off the crest.
The wave rises from the lower left and fills three quarters of the panel, the crest cropped by the top edge. The eye is carried along the lip and down into the shadowed hollow at the centre, which is the darkest part of the picture.
Deep ultramarine and navy in the mass of the water, teal in the translucent face, and a pale cold blue in the sky and spray. The darkest passages are nearly black.
Broad sweeping strokes that follow the curve of the wave, blended at their edges so the water reads as one continuous body. The falling spray is scratched in with a dry brush, light over dark, in parallel streaks.
Oil on board. Heavier in the crest than in the trough, with visible brush ridges in the lit water. The board's edges are painted white.
No signature visible within the painted area.
