Palms against a ground that moves from burnt umber at the left to a cold pale blue at the right, the trees changing colour as the ground does.
Wide and horizontal, with a dense group of trunks on the left and a looser, paler group on the right, divided by an open passage near the centre. The crowns are at staggered heights and several trunks run off the top edge.
Umber, ochre and copper through the left two thirds, giving way to steel blue and bone at the right. The palms shift with it — near-black at the left, cerulean at the right.
The ground is layered and scraped, with scored lines cut into the surface throughout. The palms sit flat over it; the right-hand group is thinner and lets the ground show through, which is what makes them recede.
Oil. Flexible unstretched support, with creases and incised marks across the whole surface. Thin, with the weave legible.
Along the bottom edge, raypatrick, in cobalt capitals, widely spaced across the full width.
I absolutely love palm tree silhouettes. I build up a texture of the trimmed palm trunk on the surface of the canvas with gesso to give a three dimensional organic impression. The base surface comes to life after painting in oil over the texture. Finally the palm silhouettes stand in a striking fashion against the brown texture.
