Desert flats in strong colour under a clouding sky, with low red mesas behind and pale blue-green brush across the foreground.
Three bands — sky, mesa, flat — with the flat taking more than half. The bushes in the foreground are the largest forms and sit at the lower right, which weights the picture against the open left.
The hottest ground on the wall: rust, coral and salmon run through the flat, laid directly against sap green and turquoise. The mesas are oxblood and violet; the sky cobalt with lilac cloud.
The ground is a weave of short strokes in many colours, none blended, so the complementaries sit raw against each other. The pale bushes are built from rounded dabs of mint and jade over the hot ground.
Oil on board. Canvas grain reads through; the brush is loaded but the paint is not heavy. The board's edges are painted white.
No signature visible within the painted area.
