Three date palms, drawn in outline, spread across a wide horizontal field. Each is given in line alone — fronds, trunk, the stub of cut leaves — with no modelling and no ground beneath them.
The format is twice as wide as it is tall, and the palms are spaced evenly across it with their crowns on a common line. Horizontal bands run the full width behind them at regular intervals, so the drawing sits over a ruled field rather than in a landscape.
A single blue-green, graded from a warmer, duller green at the upper left to a cold pale blue at the lower right. The drawing is near-black; the bands are left as lighter stripes of the ground.
Two distinct operations: a broad scrubbed underpainting, worked thinly enough that the brush direction stays visible everywhere, and over it a drawn line of uniform weight. The line is unhesitant and does not correct itself.
Oil. The support is flexible and unstretched — slack creases run through the surface in several directions. Thin throughout, with no impasto; the weave and the folds read through the paint.
Along the very bottom edge, raypatrick, in widely spaced letters running the width of the picture, drawn in the same line as the palms.
