Sunset over sage flats, with banks of lit cloud stacked above a low violet range and nothing standing up from the land at all.
Horizontal throughout and divided high: sky takes two thirds, the ridge a narrow band, the sage the lower third. The cloud masses step diagonally down from the right, which is the only movement in an otherwise level picture.
The warmest on the wall — cream and butter yellow at the top, hot orange and coral in the cloud, pink beneath, against violet-blue ridges. The foreground sage is grey-green and cool, holding the whole thing down.
The sky is worked in short horizontal strokes of unmixed colour laid against each other, so orange meets blue directly with no transition. The foreground is dabbed in short vertical touches, denser and more broken than anything above it.
Oil on board. Heavily loaded, with the canvas grain reading through the thinner sky passages and impasto in the clouds. The board's edges are painted white.
No signature visible within the painted area.
