Sunset over sage flats, the sun already behind a violet ridge, with banked cloud lit from beneath and dark brush in the near foreground.
The sky takes the upper half and the cloud runs in long horizontal banks; the ridge is a flat violet strip; the foreground opens pale and empty with two clumps of brush at the bottom corners framing it.
Scarlet and cadmium orange along the cloud base, going to magenta and violet above, against patches of surviving blue. The ridge is purple, the flats grey-green, the brush bottle green.
The lit cloud edges are single unmixed strokes of orange and red laid straight onto the slate of the cloud body. The foreground brush is stabbed in upright flicks, the only vertical marks in the picture.
Oil on board. Heavy impasto in the sky; the foreground is flatter and thinner. The board's edges are painted white.
No signature visible within the painted area.
