A hill road running down to the coast, with a couple walking away from the viewer hand in hand, more figures further on, and the whole basin opening out beyond.
The road falls away from the bottom edge and takes the eye straight down into the picture; the lamp standard stands exactly on that line and divides the view. The figures diminish along the slope and carry the distance on their own.
Lavender and violet in the road and the far hills, against sap green on the bank at the right and a strip of ochre grass. The couple are the only strong colour — one in orange, one in crimson.
The far landscape is scrubbed in short horizontal dabs with no detail at all; the near figures get three or four strokes each. The lamp post is a single unbroken vertical drawn over finished paint.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque. Unpainted margins all round.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in red over the road, letters widely spaced.
