Subject

Sunset over the peninsula seen from high ground, with ranks of cloud catching the last light and the town spread dark along the bottom.

Composition

Three quarters sky, with the cloud running in long diagonal banks from the lower left to the upper right. The horizon is low and level and the town below is handled as one continuous band of broken colour.

Palette

Cream, apricot and rose through the lit cloud against cerulean and a cooler slate in the shadowed parts. The land is violet, olive and taupe, with one orange roof as the single hot accent.

Handling

Flat dabs throughout, laid in ranks and shifting colour from touch to touch; nothing is blended and no cloud is given an outline. The town is a weave of short horizontal strokes.

Medium and support

Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque. Unpainted margins all round.

Signature

Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in ochre over the rooftops, letters widely spaced.
