Subject

The peninsula seen across open water under a crowded sky, the headland running in from the left and falling away to a point at the centre right.

Composition

Three quarters sky. The headland occupies a narrow band at the left and the sea a flat strip beneath it; the greater part of the picture is cloud, massed in horizontal ranks that diminish toward the horizon.

Palette

Lavender and periwinkle throughout, with white in the cloud and a slightly warmer grey in the sea. The headland is olive and violet; a band of ochre grass runs along the very bottom edge.

Handling

The cloud is laid in flat dabs with visible edges, light over dark, in ranks that shorten as they recede. The headland is handled more quickly, in short horizontal strokes with a few dark accents for buildings.

Medium and support

Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque. Unpainted margins all round.

Signature

Lower left, raypatrick, in red-brown over the ochre grass, letters touching.
