Subject

Low cloud over the peninsula seen from the shore, with a dark headland at the left, open water across the middle, and rocks and parked cars along the near edge.

Composition

A wide format divided by two long horizontals — the base of the cloud and the waterline — which sit close together and push the land into the bottom fifth. The picture is almost entirely weather.

Palette

Lilac, dove grey and pale pink throughout the cloud, with a band of true cerulean marking the sea. The land is olive and slate, with two or three small strokes of red among the cars.

Handling

Flat horizontal dabs stacked in ranks, light over dark, with their edges left showing. The foreground is handled more quickly, in short strokes with a few dark accents.

Medium and support

Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque. Unpainted margins all round.
