A residential street looking west at sunset, with two palms rising against a burning sky, parked cars, and houses closing both sides of the road.
The road runs straight out of the bottom edge to a vanishing point just right of centre, and the two palms stand either side of it — one near and cropped by the top edge, one further off. The sky takes everything above the roofline.
Cadmium orange and scarlet along the horizon rising through lemon to a cloud of dusky rose and mauve. The street below is grey-violet; the palms near-black.
The cloud is laid in flat dabs of rose over cream, each one separate, so the sky reads as a mosaic. The palm trunks are single unbroken pulls from the ground to the crown.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque. Unpainted margins all round.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in red over the road, letters widely spaced.
Manhattan Beach has some of the best sunsets I have ever seen. There are a couple of streets that line up nicely and have great tree lines. I remember being stopped in my tracks when I came across this view and absolutely had to paint it. I'm so glad I did.
