The beachfront on a bright afternoon — two women walking the path in swimsuits, a man crossing behind them, an ice cream stand to the right and a crowd scattered along the sand.
The path runs in from the bottom left and the figures are strung along it at decreasing size. The palms and the stand hold the right third; the sea is a thin band at the left, so the picture leans away from it.
A deep cobalt sky over pale sand and mint pavement. The stand is a saturated blue-violet with a red roof; the two figures carry the only reds in the foreground.
Figures are two or three loaded strokes each with no outline and no face. The palms are single thin trunks with dabbed crowns; the shadows on the path are flat violet strokes laid straight across.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque. Unpainted margins all round.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in red over the path, letters widely spaced.
There is a famous ice cream shop just up from the pier in Manhattan Beach. I would often people watch as I enjoyed two scoops on a cone. When the AVP professional volley ball tour is in town the streets are absolutely packed. Every corner is a party.
