Subject

An alley at sunset looking out toward the ocean, buildings rising in shadow on both sides, with wires slung across the gap and palms at the far end.

Composition

Upright, and built as a funnel: the two building masses lean in from the left and right edges, dark and almost featureless, leaving a tall wedge of lit sky between them. Everything points at the horizon.

Palette

Gold and apricot low at the centre, rising through turquoise and mint to lilac and violet at the top. The flanking buildings are olive-brown and slate, carrying no colour of their own.

Handling

The sky is laid in flat horizontal dabs that shift colour from stroke to stroke. The wires are drawn in long thin curves across finished paint, and the palms are a few small marks at the vanishing point.

Medium and support

Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque. Unpainted margins all round.

Signature

Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in orange, letters widely spaced.

From the artist:

Peeking down the alley during sunset in Manhattan Beach you can catch a view of the pier. The warmth of the summer time night promises of excitement and adventure. Which bar to next?
