A canyon looking out over a valley — a dark rock buttress at the left, red sandstone stepping down to the right, and a blue range closing the distance beyond a pale flat.
The two rock masses lean in from the left and right edges and the view opens through the gap between them, which is the brightest and emptiest part of the picture. A green floor runs along the bottom and leads the eye into that gap.
Chocolate and oxblood in the near rock, salmon and terracotta in the lit sandstone, against a cold violet-blue range and a pale turquoise sky. Two small blue-violet shrubs are the only cool note below.
The near buttress is laid in broad flat planes with almost no detail, so it reads as shadow rather than rock. The far range is scrubbed thin and level; the sandstone is cut in with square loaded strokes that step down like strata.
Oil on board. Canvas weave reads clearly through the sky and the distance; the rock is more heavily loaded. The board's edges are painted white.
No signature visible within the painted area.
