First light over the high desert, looking across a dark foreground ridge to a long blue range, with the sky already fully alight above it.
Three registers rising in temperature from the bottom up — black-green scrub, blue ridge, burning sky. The ridge runs down from left to right and opens the sky at the right, where the brightest yellow sits.
Cadmium orange, scarlet and rose in the cloud, going to lemon at the right. Beneath it a flat cobalt range, then a foreground of bottle green and near-black. The warm and the cool meet along one hard line with nothing between them.
The sky is stroked horizontally in long loaded pulls that leave ridges standing up off the surface; the clouds are not drawn but built from the gaps between those strokes. The foreground is dabbed in short broken touches over a dark ground.
Oil on board. Heavily impasted in the sky, thinner and more broken in the scrub. The board's edges are painted white.
No signature visible within the painted area.
