A rock outcrop with cholla and a tall cactus on top, looking out over a pink desert floor to low hills.
Weighted hard to the right, where the rock mass and the cactus stack up to the top edge; the left two thirds fall away into open distance. The division is diagonal and the picture is deliberately unbalanced.
A graded turquoise sky — green at the top, blue at the horizon — over a desert floor of pink and rose. The rocks are ochre where lit and deep cobalt where not; the cactus is the one true green.
Confident and blocky: each rock plane is a single loaded stroke, and the shadow faces go in as flat unmodulated blue. The pink of the floor is dragged horizontally so the ground beneath shows through.
Oil on board. The weave is visible through the sky and the distance; the rocks are thicker. The board's edges are painted white.
No signature visible within the painted area.
