Subject

A wall of sandstone cliffs running the full width of the picture, the rock stepping back in blocks, with a green flat in front of it and a narrow strip of sky above.

Composition

Almost entirely horizontal: the cliff occupies the middle half, the scrub the lower third, the sky a shallow band at the top. The deep blue clefts between the rock masses are the only verticals and they divide the wall into four.

Palette

Orange and tan in the lit rock against cobalt in the shadows — the picture's whole argument is that collision. The foreground is sage and emerald, the sky a pale turquoise.

Handling

Blocky and square-ended. The rock is laid in flat slabs with a loaded brush and no drawing, each stroke left exactly as it landed, and the shadows are single decisive pulls of blue straight down the face.

Medium and support

Oil on board. Thickly painted, with the weave of the ground showing through in the thinner passages. The board's edges are painted white.

Signature

No signature visible within the painted area.
