A view out to the sea through a line of eucalyptus, with a tiled roof below among greenbelt and a road running across the middle distance.
The trees stand between the viewer and the view, their trunks dividing the picture into vertical slots and their canopies closing the top edge. The landscape is seen in the gaps rather than over them.
Deep olive and bottle green in the canopy against a pale blue-grey sky, with a band of cerulean sea. The trunks are bone white and terracotta; a strip of ochre grass runs along the bottom.
The canopy is laid in flat dabs with the sky left showing through; the trunks are single long pulls of pale paint, drawn last, straight over the finished foliage.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque, the pale trunks sitting solid over the dark leaves. Unpainted margins all round.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in cream over the grass, letters widely spaced.
This is the view from the tree lined green belt in Hermosa Beach. The shimmering ocean glows in the distance beckoning like a siren.
