A surf shop and a low parade of buildings at sunset, seen across a car park, with a lamp standard and a shop sign standing against the sky.
The buildings run as a dark horizontal band across the lower third and the sky takes everything above. The lamp post and the sign are the only verticals, placed near the centre and well apart, and the overhead wires rule the sky into bands.
Deep violet and ultramarine through the sky, with teal and cobalt breaking through. The buildings carry a seam of hot orange where the last light catches their faces — the only warm colour, and very small.
The sky is laid in flat overlapping dabs that keep their own edges; the wires are drawn last in thin dark strokes straight across them. The lit faces are single horizontal pulls of unmixed orange.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque. Unpainted margins all round.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in red over the violet foreground, letters widely spaced.
Right next to Jack's Surf Shop in Hermosa beach there is an apartment complex on the hill. When the sun sets you can see a distinction between the light and shade as the sun slides behind the horizon. The apartments on the top of the hill bask in the last warm rays of the day.
