A wide boulevard at dusk with a white car coming toward the viewer, low commercial buildings on both sides, and a long bank of cloud lit from beneath.
A very wide format, with the road running in from the bottom and the buildings held low on both sides so the sky takes three quarters. The utility pole at the left is the one strong vertical and it anchors an otherwise horizontal picture.
Mauve, lilac and dove grey throughout the cloud, with pale lemon and mint where the light comes through. The buildings are violet and slate; one small orange facade at the far left is the only hot note.
The cloud is laid in flat horizontal dabs, each a separate touch with its edge left visible. The car is a single pale shape; the pole and wires are drawn last in thin dark strokes.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque. Unpainted margins all round.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in red-orange, letters widely spaced.
There are so many great views of the ocean peeking through the buildings. When the clouds in the sky are just right, the water seems to have a magical glow. It is so fun to work quickly to catch the color before the light changes. I hope I can do it again.
