A sky full of scarlet cloud at sunset, seen over the roofline of a house, with palms in silhouette at the right and a dark fence along the bottom.
The roof cuts in from the lower left as a hard black diagonal and the palms close the right edge, so the sky is seen through a gap between two darks. The cloud runs in horizontal bands that fan out from the lower right.
Scarlet and vermilion in long streaks against lilac and slate cloud, with cold cerulean breaking through at the left. The foreground is near-black throughout.
The red is laid in short flat horizontal strokes directly over the violet, each one separate and unblended, so the colour sits on the surface rather than behind it. The silhouettes are flat unmodulated masses.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque; the scarlet reads as body colour over the cooler ground. Unpainted margins all round.
Lower centre, raypatrick, in ochre over the dark roofline, letters touching.
