Subject

Five palms in dark silhouette across a green ground, their crowns at the top of the canvas and their trunks dropping to the bottom edge.

Composition

The crowns sit in a loose row across the upper third, two of them overlapping at the left so they read as a pair. The lower two thirds is open ground, marked only by the trunks and by scratched lines in the paint.

Palette

Emerald, viridian and a yellow-green at the upper left, with the whole field graded toward turquoise at the right. The palms are blue-black.

Handling

The ground is scrubbed and pooled with heavy spatter through it, and scored lines are cut into the surface while the paint is wet. The palms go on flat and opaque, their fronds drawn out in fine strokes.

Medium and support

Oil. Flexible unstretched support. Thin and layered, with incised marks and spatter forming part of the surface.

Signature

No signature visible within the painted area.

From the artist:

I painted an entire series of these proud palm silhouettes. Many of them found homes around the world, brightening the rooms they hang in. This one channels the feeling of tropical forests and palms in a soothing way.
