A hotel pool from a shaded vantage. White loungers line the near edge under canvas umbrellas, bathers stand in the shallow water, and a banana palm rises at the right. Strings of festoon lights cross the upper third.
Framed on both sides by darks — a tree trunk at the left edge, a seated figure in silhouette at the lower right — so the lit pool is seen through a gap. The loungers march left to right in a shallow arc and the pool opens diagonally toward the viewer.
Cerulean and turquoise in the water and sky, against white umbrellas, ochre decking and pink flesh. The two framing darks are nearly black and carry no detail at all.
Figures and furniture are abbreviated to single strokes with no outline; the water is a loose weave of horizontal marks over a flat ground. The string lights are drawn in one continuous black line across finished paint.
Gouache on paper. Matte, flat, opaque — the white umbrellas sit over the blue sky as solid bodies. An unpainted margin runs along the top and left.
Lower left, raypatrick, brushed in grey. Separately, in pencil below the painted area at the lower right, the title in the artist's hand: Dream Hollywood Hotel.
I was excited to go around LA and paint the hot pools of the summer season. I remember asking the girls where I should go and receiving an endless list of places. I caught the Dream Hotel on a bright sunny Saturday.
