Cumulus over high desert. Cloud occupies the upper four fifths; beneath it a flat violet ridge runs the width, and a narrow foreground band of orange ground with green scrub closes the bottom.
Three horizontal registers, stacked and unequal — sky, ridge, foreground — with no vertical incident at all. The horizon sits low and the clouds build upward from it.
Deep blue through cerulean to white in the sky; the ridge is a single violet laid almost flat; the foreground is orange against emerald, the only warm-cool collision in the picture.
Thick and loaded. The paint stands off the surface in ridges that hold the mark of the bristles, and the lights are dragged across the blues wet-into-wet so the edges of the clouds break and catch. Nothing is drawn; every form is the shape of a brushstroke.
Oil on board. Among the most heavily impasted of the small panels, with ridges catching the light across the whole sky. The board's edges are painted white.
No signature visible within the painted area.
