A flat-topped butte under a closing sky, with sand and low scrub running toward the viewer and one upright yucca left of centre. The weather is nearly on the land.
The butte sits dead centre and dark, a single mass with the ridges running out level from either side of it. Below, the ground opens toward the bottom corners in a shallow V of lit sand, which is the only brightness in the picture.
Slate and indigo throughout, with one patch of true blue sky breaking through at the top. The land is green-black; against it the sand runs ochre and dull gold, the warmest note in a cold painting.
The storm is scrubbed in broad diagonal sweeps that leave the canvas grain showing; the butte is a single flat mass with no detail at all. The lit sand is stroked horizontally, drier and more broken.
Oil on board. Moderately loaded, with the weave reading through the sky. The board's edges are painted white.
No signature visible within the painted area.
