Yoichi, the red ranger
Yoichi, the red ranger of Earth 8675309, in a gold-horned helmet and lacquered samurai armour, katana at the hip and pink hakama below. The helmet is lacquered red with a silver visor and a pair of gold horns curving up from the brow. Below it a studded cuirass in red plate, one bare arm with a gold vambrace, red gloves, a black obi with a gold buckle, and voluminous pink and purple hakama. A katana rides at the hip, its blue blade crossing out of the picture at the lower left.
A costume plate: figure centred on bare paper, cropped at the shins, turned slightly so both the chest plate and the sword are legible at once. The horns are the widest point at the top, the hakama the widest at the bottom, and the dark obi is the belt that divides them.
Reds from scarlet in the armour to pink and violet in the trousers, kept in the same family throughout; gold for the horns, the buckle and the arm; one cool blue for the blade, which is the only thing in the picture that is not warm.
Painted in overlapping transparent reds so the armour plates read as separate pieces without any outline between them. The hakama is the loosest passage — broad wet strokes dragged downward and left to dry with hard edges where they stopped.
Watercolour and ink on paper, scanned flat. No white paint; the visor's shine and the highlights on the armour are places the brush went around.
