A head-on portrait study of a young woman with a blunt fringe and her hair piled into a high bun, looking straight out. The face is tipped slightly forward so the forehead dominates and the eyes look up through the fringe.
A single head on bare paper, cropped at the neck, with the bun breaking the top edge. There is no background at all, so the silhouette of the hair does the whole job of framing the face.
Warm ochre, apricot and umber through the hair against pale flesh tones, with violet in the shadows under the fringe and blue in the eyes.
Washes brushed in fast over a light ink line and left to run at the edges, the hair laid in as broad wet strokes with the paper showing through. The features are drawn with a finer nib afterwards.
