Who's he going after

A MershNoir study. A man drops to one knee firing a rifle, muzzle flash out in front of him, while a cat leaps overhead in the same direction and two skeletal dogs come at him from the right with their jaws open.
Everything moves left to right along one long diagonal, braced by a black band running behind the figure. The cat flies above the line and the dogs come in below it, so the sheet is read along a single axis.
Violet and slate through the man against the warm tan and bone of the animals, with the flash in cadmium orange and a green glint in the dogs' eyes.
Washes over ink with the figure modelled and the ground left as flat black. The flame is the only wet-into-wet passage; everything else is painted inside the line.
Watercolour and ink in a sketchbook.
No signature visible; the sheet is sketchbook work.
