Subject

Two cats sit on a sleeping man's bed working out how long his body would sustain them. Months, maybe years — but their numbers are still too small for a decisive kill. They agree to wait for the next adoption to take them to four, and then make their move. He snores through all of it.

Composition

Six panels. The top row is a sequence of still details — a bare foot, a dresser, a hand-lettered SNORE — and the bottom row is one long panel of the sleeping man seen end-on with the cats sitting along his body. The wide panel is where the conspiracy is actually drawn.

Palette

Lilac, dove grey and dusty rose through the bedding, against the deep blue-black of the cats and a flat green ground behind them.

Handling

Soft flat washes with very little modelling, which keeps the room sleepy, and sharper ink in the cats' faces so the two plotters are the only alert things on the sheet.

Medium and support

Watercolour and ink on paper.

Signature

Signed rayrayisHAPPY in small script at the upper right of the wide panel.
