watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A sunset sky in broken cloud over a flat dark land, the light breaking through in bands low down and nothing below the horizon but silhouette.
An extreme horizontal, nine tenths sky. The land is compressed into the bottom fifth as an unbroken dark band, and the cloud runs across the whole width in ranks that converge toward the light.
Cobalt and indigo at the top dropping through plum and oxblood to cadmium yellow and amber at the horizon. The land is a flat near-black with one seam of scarlet along its upper edge.
Layered transparent washes worked over one another until the darks are nearly opaque, each cloud left as a hard-edged shape with the warm ground showing through its gaps. Nothing is blended.
Watercolour on paper. Transparent throughout, with the bare sheet showing round the painted strip.
No signature visible within the painted area.
