Subject

A wall of red and blue cliffs across the middle distance, with a dark watercourse below it and flowering ground cover filling the whole foreground.

Composition

Three registers — sky, cliff, foreground — with the foreground taking the lower half. The cliff line runs level the full width; the depth is carried by the foreground growing larger and more saturated as it comes forward.

Palette

A pale cerulean sky over cliffs of terracotta, coral and slate blue set directly against one another. The foreground is jade, teal and lemon scattered with flecks of crimson and cadmium orange.

Handling

Flat transparent washes in the cliff, laid as separate facets and left to dry at their edges. The foreground is built entirely from small individual touches of unmixed colour, none of them blended into its neighbour.

Medium and support

Watercolour on paper. Transparent throughout, with the bare sheet showing round the painted area.

Signature

No signature visible within the painted area.
