Subject

A long escarpment of cliffs and buttes across the full width, with a green bench and a dry wash in front and open sky above.

Composition

An extreme horizontal, roughly three to one. The cliff wall occupies the middle band, the bench and wash the lower third, and the sky a shallow strip at the top; the recession is carried entirely by the cliff diminishing to the right.

Palette

Cerulean and cobalt in the sky over a wall of slate blue, mauve and dusty rose. The bench below is sap green and olive, cut by bands of umber in the wash.

Handling

Flat transparent washes laid edge to edge, each left to dry as its own hard-edged shape, so the cliff reads as a stack of facets rather than a modelled form. The foreground is dragged in long horizontal strokes.

Medium and support

Watercolour on paper. Transparent throughout, with the bare sheet showing round the painted strip.

Signature

No signature visible within the painted area.
