watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A long dark mesa running the full width under heavy cloud, with a green flat and a watercourse in front of it.
An extreme horizontal, roughly three to one. The mesa runs level across the middle and the picture divides into three bands — cloud, rock, flat — none of them interrupted by anything vertical.
Cobalt breaking through dove and pewter cloud, over a mesa of indigo and deep violet with rust and sienna along its lit face. The flat below is olive and sap green.
Broad flat washes laid one over another and left to dry at their own edges. The mesa is one loaded pull straight across the sheet with the warm face dragged in afterwards while it was still damp.
Watercolour on paper. Transparent throughout, with the bare sheet showing round the painted strip.
No signature visible within the painted area.
