watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A long low island or headland under a great bank of cloud, with flat water in front and a single small boat on it.
An extreme horizontal, nine tenths sky and water. The land runs level across the lower quarter and the cloud masses stack above it; the boat is a mark barely a few millimetres wide and sets the scale for everything.
Cobalt and steel blue through the sky with cloud in dove, pewter and bone. The land is indigo with passages of ochre and tan where the light catches the bluffs.
Broad flat washes laid one over another and left to dry at their own edges, so the cloud is a stack of transparent rectangles rather than a modelled form. Nothing is lifted anywhere.
Watercolour on paper. Transparent throughout, with a ruled pencil border and the bare sheet showing outside it.
No signature visible within the painted area.
