watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A panoramic sunset with the whole sky in broken cloud and a low black skyline of palms, poles and roofs along the bottom edge.
An extreme horizontal. The silhouette runs the full width in the bottom eighth and the cloud fills everything above it, converging toward a band of open light just above the horizon.
Oxblood, rust and burnt sienna through the cloud with cold indigo and cobalt driven through the middle of it. The light at the horizon is gold and amber; the skyline is a flat near-black.
Layered transparent washes worked over one another until the darks are nearly opaque, each left to dry at its own edge so the cloud reads as a stack of torn shapes. The skyline is cut in last, flat and sharp.
Watercolour on paper. Heavily layered, with the deckle and curl of the sheet visible at the edges.
No signature visible within the painted area.
