watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A long panoramic strip of sky at sunset over a flat dark shore, with ranks of cloud running the whole width and no feature below them but one olive band of land.
An extreme horizontal, roughly three to one. The land is compressed into the bottom eighth and the sky takes everything else; the cloud bars run level and parallel, shortening as they drop toward the horizon.
Dusty rose, mauve and slate through the upper cloud, warming to apricot and sienna along the middle band, over a horizon of pale turquoise. The land is a dull olive-brown.
Transparent washes laid wet and allowed to dry at their own edges, so every cloud is a hard-edged shape rather than a modelled form. Nothing is lifted and nothing is blended; the paper carries the lights.
Watercolour on paper. Transparent throughout, with the white of the sheet showing at the edges of the strip.
No signature visible within the painted area.
