watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Two comic figure studies on a sketchbook page — a robed character in a visored helmet reclining at the top, and a bald man in an orange jacket swinging a punch below.
Both figures lie across their panels on the diagonal and both break out of the ruled border — a hand here, a boot there — so the panels cannot contain them. That overflow is the point of the page.
Magenta, violet and teal in the robes above; the figure below is in cadmium orange and cobalt with pale blue jeans. Both grounds are washed in loose green and teal.
Pen first, fast and sure, with the colour dropped inside the line and the grounds flooded round the figures afterwards. The drapery folds are drawn as parallel strokes rather than modelled.
Watercolour with pen and ink in a spiral-bound sketchbook, two studies on one page. A studio photograph of a page rather than a single picture.
No signature visible within the drawn area.
