watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Four watercolour landscape studies ruled out on a sketchbook page — a bare tree on flowering ground, a blue range above a river, a cloud study over dark fields, and a burning sunset.
The four sit in two loose columns with bare paper between them. Three are built on a level horizon in the lower half; the sunset at the lower right abandons the horizon altogether and becomes a field of colour.
Sap green, chartreuse and ochre through the two field studies, cobalt and slate in the range. The sunset breaks into cadmium orange, scarlet and gold against indigo and is the hottest thing on the page.
Fast and wet, each study a few washes dropped into one another with small dark touches stamped over them when dry. None is worked beyond the first statement.
Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, four studies on one page, dated in pencil below. A studio photograph of a page of studies rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
