watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Four watercolour landscape studies on a sketchbook page — a wide valley under cloud, a green flat at dusk, a blue mesa above a flowering slope, and a palm in a squall.
Four ruled rectangles across the spread with bare paper between them. The largest, at the lower left, is also the busiest: the slope runs toward the viewer in bands of broken colour while the other three stay quiet and flat.
Cobalt and ultramarine in the ranges over flats in emerald, sap green and ochre. The palm study at the right is the coolest, grey and violet, with the tree in strong green against it.
Washes laid wet and allowed to run together, with the foreground in the large study built from dozens of separate angular touches of unmixed colour laid over dry paint.
Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, four studies on one page. A studio photograph of a page of studies rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
