A MershNoir study. A heavy figure in a long violet coat turns into the frame with a pistol raised and a cigarette in his mouth, against a black ground split by falling streaks of light with THWACK lettered across the top.
The figure stands off-centre against a field of vertical streaks, and the lettering sits high on the right where the light is brightest. Everything is upright — the man, the streaks, the letters — so the one diagonal, his arm, carries the whole picture.
Violet and indigo through the figure against black and acid yellow, with the lettering in red and orange.
Watercolour over ink, the background dragged in long dry strokes so the paper breaks through. The coat is painted in two flat passes and the face is barely drawn.
