Subject

A tall Victorian Gothic house drawn in ink — steep gables, a spire, bay windows and a wraparound porch — with a single palm standing beside it. Architecture study for the city.

Composition

The building fills the sheet on a three-quarter view from below, the spire running out of the top edge and the porch roof carrying the base. The palm answers the spire at the right and is the only vertical that is not architecture.

Palette

Black ink on white. No colour.

Handling

Built almost entirely from parallel hatching laid at different angles for each plane, with solid black reserved for the window openings and the palm. The pencil underdrawing is still visible around the roofline and has not been erased.

Medium and support

Ink over pencil in a spiral-bound sketchbook.

Signature

No signature visible.
