Subject

The Maniak's helmet filling the left half of the page, jaws open on a double row of teeth, a purple and gold figure wrenching free of them. The helmet is a black dome with a white crescent across it and a long fringe of dark hair, and the mouth is open wide enough to take the whole of the other figure's lower half. Above it a woman with magenta hair in two long tails leans in, baring her teeth and letting out a small red heart. A single word is lettered across the purple figure's thigh. Loose limbs and scraps scatter off to the right.

Composition

The page is split on a strong curve: the black sphere of the helmet takes the left half, the jaws run up through the centre as a pale diagonal of teeth, and the figures crowd the top right against open yellow. Nothing is centred — the weight is all on the left and the action all on the right.

Palette

Black and grey for the helmet, purples and violets for the figures, a flat yellow wash behind them, and red spatter carried across all three.

Handling

Washed in broad and wet over ink, the big dark sphere laid as one grey pass and brushed dry at the top for the highlight. The muscles are built in overlapping violet strokes rather than outlined, and the red is flicked over the whole lower half.

Medium and support

Watercolour and ink on paper, scanned flat.
