A visitor at a riverboat casino announces that his system says the machine is due, lectures Mersh on how a real man overcomes the odds through persistence and integrity, offers to mentor him — and then hits the jackpot, takes his shirt off, and has to be asked what exactly that was for.
Eight panels, unusually many, which is what the build needs: the riverboat, the machine, the speech in three beats, the hand on the button, the hand-lettered JACKPOT WINNER, and the aftermath. The lettered panel is the loudest thing on the sheet and sits dead centre.
Cornflower and periwinkle through the boat and the carpet against the hot red and orange of the win. The speech panels are kept deliberately cool so the payout is the only warm passage.
Ink line with washes brushed quickly and left streaky, the machine and the lettering given hard edges while the figures stay loose.
Watercolour and ink on paper.
