The dressing room
The dancers' dressing room at the Sugar Cookie: Mersh seated at the left with his back to us in a pink shirt, working at a case of bottles, while the women get ready along a mirrored counter under a run of bare bulbs. Costumes hang on the rail behind him and a wig sits on a stand at the right.
A long horizontal reading left to right, Mersh large and close in the near corner and the room running away from him in a shallow band. The line of bulbs along the top edge ties the whole width together.
Lavender, dove and mint through the room with the warm note held back for the skin and the pine of the counter. His pink shirt is the only saturated colour on the sheet.
Light ink contour with pale transparent washes, almost nothing worked twice. The figures at the mirror are left deliberately unresolved so the eye stays with the foreground.
