Sam, Beck, Artie and Vito on the cover of Superkillers Volume 1, stacked up a starfield above the five rangers of Earth 8675309. Vito's spectacled face fills the top of the sky, the eyes behind the heavy frames looking down. Beneath him Sam is a bust in gold and blue, white hair standing straight up, the mask's eye-slits burning red. Beck is at his left shoulder in her purple hood, Artie the robot hovers at his right with a worried face lit on its black screen. At the foot of the picture five rangers stand in a line on the curve of a planet: pink, blue, the red samurai with the gold horns, yellow, black.
A totem, read top to bottom: the supervisor, the agent, the planet. Vito's glasses make a horizontal bar across the top third and the row of rangers makes another across the bottom, so the eye drops between them and lands on Sam's face in the centre. The planet's curve is the only arc in a picture otherwise built of verticals, and it closes the bottom edge.
Indigo and violet all through, dark at the corners and lifting to lilac behind the heads, the sky flecked white for stars. The gold of Sam's shoulders is the one warm note above, and the five rangers below are the only saturated colour in the picture.
Wet washes laid broad for the sky and allowed to pool at the edges of the figures, then ink drawn over the top for the faces and the hardware. Sam's hair is reserved paper — the white is nothing, left alone, with the ink cut around it. The rangers are an inch high each and painted with a few touches apiece.
Watercolour and ink on paper, scanned flat. Brush drawing over wash throughout, no opaque white anywhere, the paper doing the work wherever something is bright.
Lower right, RAYRAYISHAPPY in pencil capitals, small, set into the dark of the planet and following its curve slightly.
