Subject

The Green Arrow gag staged wide on the street: Superkiller Sam down in the rubble with the apple on his head and arrows all over the pavement. Sam is down on one knee in the rubble, apple on his head, white hair shot through with pink, one gloved hand raised. Arrows lie everywhere across the broken pavement. Green Arrow is at the upper right, braced in a crouch with the bow, and grey buildings stand behind in orange smoke.

Composition

A wide shot where the other is a close-up: both men are fully in frame and separated by a long diagonal of debris running from the lower right to the upper left. The ground takes up more than half the picture, so the figures sit high and the fallen arrows do the pointing.

Palette

Yellow and blue on the figure against a ground of olive, grey and brown, with orange smoke above. The arrow fletchings — red, teal, green — are the only clean colour and they are scattered deliberately across the dull ground.

Handling

Looser and faster than the finished version: the line is scratchier, the washes are thinner and the pavement is largely spatter and dry brush. The buildings are drawn in outline and barely coloured.

Medium and support

Watercolour and ink on paper, scanned flat. The paper's tooth shows through most of the ground, and the edges of the washes are left hard where they dried.

Signature

Lower centre, RayRayIsHappy in ink script across the bottom of the figure.
